Black vs Brown SMP Pigment: How Artists Choose

Black and brown SMP pigments are tools, not rigid client categories. The right choice depends on the visual result the artist is trying to create.

Black-Based SMP Pigments

Black-based pigments provide a versatile starting point because they can be diluted to a wide range of working strengths. 5PM Shadow Original is designed as a broad-use professional SMP pigment, while BLVK Label starts from a deeper black concentration.

Brown-Based SMP Pigments

Midnight Brown gives artists a brown base when that produces a softer or warmer match for the client’s follicle color or desired healed appearance.

A client with dark hair may still benefit from a softer working mix, while a client with lighter hair may not automatically require brown pigment. Skin tone, follicle appearance, treatment type, and desired contrast all matter.
